Must say Kudos on another masterfully written piece. You are, by far, not only my fav writer on the site, but my favorite columnist, period. You always manage to tap real emotion with an introspective sense of nostalgia that leans more toward the salient truth of someone’s first words than the self-obscuring nature of their first car.

Rod Gilbert was a class person on and off the ice. It is hard to believe he was 80! We will miss him.

As a side story, I was an Ottawa Senator season ticket from the beginning and 25 more years after that. I had purchased a company near San Jose and took my GM to a game there. A few years later I had him fly to Ottawa for a meeting and then to a Senators game. These were the only 2 NHL games he ever attended. At the Senator game he said this is amazing, it’s the same referee, you! You didn’t wear a helmet so you were recognizable. I have always wanted to share that story with you.
